# How to Price Residential Solar Installation Jobs
Pricing a residential solar job wrong in either direction hurts. Bid too high and the homeowner hands the same quote to the company down the road. Bid too low and you eat the cost of a re-pull, a failed inspection, or a string that came in undersized once the utility flagged it. Most installers who fail don't fail on craftsmanship. They fail because they quoted a 7 kW system off a rough roof sketch and never accounted for permit revisions, a service-panel upgrade, or the two extra truck rolls interconnection demanded.
Here is how experienced solar operators actually build a price, what the real cost drivers are, and where margin quietly leaks out.
Price by the Watt, Then Sanity-Check the Line Items
The residential solar market prices in dollars per watt of DC nameplate capacity. As of 2026, cash-deal installed pricing for a typical owner-occupied rooftop system runs roughly $2.50 to $3.50 per watt before the federal tax credit, with premium markets and complex roofs pushing past $4.00. A clean 8 kW system at $3.00/W is a $24,000 gross contract.
But dollars-per-watt is a benchmark, not a bid. You still build the number bottom-up and confirm your per-watt figure lands in range. A defensible line-item stack for that same 8 kW job looks roughly like this:
- Modules (20 x 400W panels): $3,000 to $4,400
- Inverter or microinverters: $2,000 to $3,500
- Racking, flashing, and mounting hardware: $1,200 to $1,800
- Balance of system (wire, conduit, breakers, disconnects, rapid shutdown): $1,000 to $1,600
- Permit and plan-set fees: $300 to $1,500 depending on jurisdiction
- Labor (2-person crew, 2 to 3 days): $2,500 to $4,000
- Electrician time for the main service tie-in: $600 to $1,200
Add your overhead recovery and target net, and the per-watt number falls out. If your bottom-up total divides out to $4.10/W in a market that pays $3.00, you have a design or efficiency problem to solve before you send the quote, not after.
The Cost Drivers That Actually Move the Number
Two systems of identical wattage can differ by $6,000 in true cost. The wattage is not what makes them different. These factors are:
Roof complexity. A single-plane asphalt-shingle roof is the cheap case. Tile adds hooks and breakage risk. Slate or metal standing-seam changes your attachment entirely. Multiple planes and orientations mean more MPPT inputs, more string design work, and more labor hours per panel. A steep-pitch or three-story roof pulls in fall-protection setup and sometimes a lift.
Electrical service condition. This is the single biggest surprise cost. If the main panel is a 100A service already near capacity, the 120% busbar rule under NEC 705 often forces a line-side tap, a main-breaker derate, or a full 200A panel upgrade. A service upgrade adds $2,000 to $4,500 and its own permit. Walk the panel on every site visit and photograph the busbar rating and main breaker.
Circuit distance and conduit runs. A detached garage or a long run from array to point of interconnection eats wire, conduit, and hours. Measure it.
System design and code compliance. NEC Article 690 governs PV wiring, and rapid-shutdown requirements under 690.12 dictate module-level electronics on most rooftop jobs. Getting string sizing, voltage drop, and wire gauge right at design time is what keeps you from a callback. Don't Forget Permits and Interconnection in the Price
New installers price the hardware and labor and forget that the paperwork is a cost center with its own timeline. The two workflows that make or break your schedule:
Permitting. You submit a plan set, single-line diagram, and structural documentation to the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction). Fees range from under $300 in solar-friendly counties to well over $1,500 where structural review is required. Some jurisdictions now accept SolarAPP+ for instant approval; others take three to six weeks. Build that delay into your customer's expectations so the deposit-to-PTO timeline is honest.
Interconnection and net metering. Before the system produces a kilowatt-hour you can sell back, the utility has to approve interconnection and, in most cases, swap or authorize a bidirectional meter. This is a separate application from the building permit, with its own review queue. The final milestone is Permission to Operate (PTO), and until you have it, the customer cannot legally energize. Common Pricing Mistakes That Kill Margin
- Quoting off satellite imagery alone. A drone or satellite tool gets you a proposal. It does not tell you the rafters are 24 inches on center, the panel is full, or there is knob-and-tube in the attic. Do the physical site survey before the contract price is final.
- Eating change orders. If the panel upgrade wasn't in scope, it is a signed change order, not a favor. Put the trigger conditions in the contract.
- Underpricing labor on re-roofs and layovers. If the roof has less than five years of life, you are either coordinating a re-roof or you will be pulling that array in three years for free. Price accordingly or decline.
- Ignoring overhead recovery. Your truck, insurance, NABCEP-certified designer time, sales cost, and warranty reserve all have to be inside the per-watt number. A job that clears direct cost but not overhead is a job that slowly bankrupts you.
- No warranty reserve. Set aside a few cents per watt for the workmanship warranty. Roof penetrations are your liability for a decade.
Build the Estimate the Same Way Every Time
The installers who scale cleanly do not reprice from scratch on every job. They run every lead through the same sequence: site survey, load and string design, bill of materials, labor hours by roof type, permit and interconnection fee lookup, then overhead and target margin on top. The output is a quote you can defend line by line when a homeowner asks why you are $1,800 over the competitor. Usually the honest answer is that the competitor forgot the service upgrade.
